You’ve got questions, we’ve got answers.
What sort of equipment do you use?
All of our kayaks are tandem sit-on-top Malibu XL Ocean Kayaks. They are very stable; don’t worry, you probably won’t fall out. Keep in mind that the kayaks can hold a passenger weighing at most 250 lbs, and this is a physical activity that requires some core strength and balance.
As far as fishing gear, we are obsessed with figuring out which lures work best with which type of leader and hooks. We use live bait rods, jigging rods, popping rods, and reels to match. Check out our sponsors here!
Can I bring my own fishing gear?
Sure, knock yourself out, but keep in mind that fishing grounds are like ladies, and the tricks you use at home might not work on this foreign lady.
Can I rent a kayak?
Sorry, we don’t normally rent out our kayaks. The fishing village in Mal Pais is situated on a rocky little bay. If you don’t know the lay of the land, and how to read the waves, it’s very easy to damage the kayaks and/or cause serious injury to yourself. We do sometimes make exceptions with clients who fish with us multiple times and demonstrate a competence and respect on the water.
How many guides will come on our tour?
For fishing tours, there is always one guide per guest in each kayak. Each guide sits in the rear seat and we’ll do our best to help you reel in your dinner. Because these tours are very one-on-one, it’s best to have no more than four guests per fishing tour. This also applies to our Mal Pais Ocean Paddling tour.
On the Rio Manzanillo, and other river tours, because the water is much calmer and more predictable, we are able to have a much higher guide to guest ratio.
Do you have an age limit?
On the younger end of the scale, ocean tours are best for kids 6+ years. Our youngest guest on a river tour was 2 years old, but keep in mind that because kids are generally not too quiet, and animals are easily disturbed, you may not see as much wildlife.
We don’t really have an upper limit, but remember that ocean tours are very physically demanding, and ocean or river, you are exposed in the sun for extended periods of time.
What do I need to bring?

How do I make a reservation? Do you require a deposit? How do I pay?
Contact us here to let us know when you’ll be in Mal Pais and what kind of tour you’re interested in, and we’ll do our best to choose the best conditions for you. Keep in mind that the further out you make your reservation, the more difficult it is to predict fishing conditions beyond general migration and weather trends. If you’ll be here during the Dry season (Dec-April), it is best to make a reservation due to the high volume to tourists in town. The rest of the year, you can make more of a vague reservation based upon your dates. We’ll hold a few days for you during your vacation, and when you arrive we’ll check the weather and talk to the guys in the fishing village.
We do require a 50% deposit, payable via PayPal. You do not need a PayPal account, just a major credit card. We will send you an invoice via email.
What’s your cancellation policy?
Reservations that are canceled more than a month in advance will receive a 50% refund on deposit. Cancel less than 48 hours before your tour reservation and lose your whole deposit.
Tours canceled by us due to weather conditions will receive either a rain check, or if you don’t have time before you leave, you will receive 80% of your deposit back.
